Howe Gelb Unexpectedly Brings Some" Yippity" To The Go-Go Radio Magic Show
March 02, 2011 12:24 PM PST
Ever since being drawn in to the gravitational pull of Giant Sand's music, Howe Gelb sat at the top of my shortlist of people I would love to have a beer and conversation with. His catalogue and approach to recording and touring as well as the way in which he ran the business end of his career changed the way I thought about and heard music. Like a stranger walking out of the desert with all the right questions. I don't quite remember how the interview materialized. I believe Prince Palu initiated contact with his management after I had gushed my love and admiration for this man and his music on a weekly basis. No date was ever confirmed for a phone-in interview. We entered the station that night, disappointed that Mr. Gelb slipped through our fingers. Just as we announce the situation on air.... the phone rings.... Unprepared. Disbelief. Shaky. Rough. Magic. What peyote must feel like. Totally befitting the man we had on the phone. This was my first ever interview. Crystal Antlers Strip Down For The Go-Go Radio Magic ShowMarch 02, 2011 09:52 AM PST
In 2008 Prince Palu and Oncle Ian were pretty disapointed at having just missed the Long Beach California's Crystal Antlers 3AM performance at the Cakeshop during CMJ the previous year. The following day Oncle Ian ran into Crystal Antlers frontman Johnny Bell at an intersection somewhere in Manhattan. Handshakes and cell phone numbers exchanged with intentions of setting up a phone interview. Fast forward to NXNE in Toronto the following summer.... Crystal Antlers play an outdoor show and blow us away! A chat with percussionist Damian "Sexual Chocolate" Edwards becomes a day long field trip filled with food, drink and permanent marker smudges. A memorable conversation prior to their evening gig took place in an elementary schoolyard with guitarist Andrew King and drummer Kevin Stuart. The adventure ended with a capacity crowd show at Sneaky Dee's. After the show farewells were made along with talk of perhaps doing a phone interview.... The following October at CMJ we caught up with Damian before their gig in Brooklyn. Post show we chatted with the band and pointed out that at the end of the month they would be playing Montreal and we proposed a live session for the Go-Go Radio Magic Show. On November 30th 2009, during the first snow fall of the year, their infamous "cooking oil" van pulled up to Concordia University's Loyola Campus and Crystal Antlers made good on their promise. The band offered up a unique acoustic performance of "Andrew", "Swollen Sky" and "Thousand Eyes". Enjoy! The horniest Go-Go Radio Magic Show ever ...December 16, 2010 03:57 PM PST
Prince Palu, flying solo, decided to try and play only songs with great horns ... thus creating the horniest Go-Go Radio Magic Show ever! Heavy doses of funk and soul mixed in with the usual rock n roll. A slightly different flavour, but still the same radio magic.
